The Laramie Project, a play by Moisés Kaufman and The Members of The Tectonic Theatre Project, speaks powerfully to us of the tragic murder of Matthew Shepard in October 1998, shows us a community’s value system that gave rise to his murder and then the subsequent compassion later demonstrated to ward against such a heinous act in the future. Matthew Shepard’s tragic death became a symbol of intolerance, not just for a nation but for the people of Laramie, Wyoming. The event was deeply personal, and it is their own voices we hear in this thought-provoking piece of theatre.

Kaufman, and the members of the Tectonic Theatre Project, made six trips to Laramie over the period of a year and a half in the aftermath of the attack on Matthew, conducting more than 200 interviews with the people of the town. The Laramie Project constructs a deeply moving chronicle of the life of the town of Laramie in the year after Matthew’s murder asking us to consider our own value systems and question our own beliefs. Our Margaret River Senior High School production of Moments From Laramie, chooses selected ‘Moments’ from the script to explore the depths to which humanity can sink and to show the heights of compassion of which we are all capable.

Performed with rights purchased from Broadway Licensing Group.
